Figures and Facts
Almost half of the Russians make their savings in rubles
Do the Russians make savings, and if yes, in what currency? That was the question of the February survey conducted by ROMIR Monitoring Research Holding. The survey was based on national representative sample and embraced 1600 respondents aged 18 and above from more than 100 cities and towns in all federal districts. Error margin does not exceed ±2,5%.
The respondents were asked to answer the following question:
Do you make savings, and if yes, in what currency? (%)
The answers are given below (multiple answers were possible, so total is not 100%):

So, about half of the Russian respondents (57%) make savings, and majority of them (46%) trust Russian ruble. A bit more often than on an average in the sample this answer was given by the respondents from Volga federal district (57%), as well as by those from towns with population of 100-500 thousand people (51%). Among women the share of those making savings in Russian currency is larger than among men, thus making up 48% versus 42% respectively. Savings in rubles are more typical of the respondents of elder age categories (55%).
Every tenth participant of the survey (10%) makes savings in American dollars. This currency is a symbol of keeping and accrual of money for the respondents from Central federal district (15%), as well as for those from megapolises (17%). Trust to US dollar was most often expressed by those aged 25-34 (16%), by those with higher education (14%) and high income level (21%).
And Euro has gained confidence of 4% of the Russians. A bit more often than on an average in the sample preference of EU currency was mentioned by the respondents from cities with population above 1 million (7%), those aged 25-34, with higher education (8%) and high income level (8%).
Four out of ten surveyed respondents (41%) do not make savings. A bit more often than on an average in the sample this answer was chosen by those from the Urals federal district (58%) and small towns with population below 100 thousand people (52%). Absence of savings is more typical of young people (53%) and of those with low income level (45%).
The histogram above shows dynamics of attitude of Russian respondents towards savings in general and different currencies in particular. So, in March 2003, when ROMIR Monitoring asked its respondents to answer such question for the first time, above half of those surveyed declared making no savings (54%). Only 30% of the respondents made savings in rubles, 10% of those interviewed trusted US dollar and 4% - preferred Euro. In January 2005 the share of non-makers did not change (54%), though trust towards Russian currency increased a bit, thus making up 34%, while preference towards US dollar experienced 4% decrease (6%). This February the share of those not making savings decreased seriously (41%). Ruble fortified its position (46%), and trust of the Russians towards US currency also increased (10%).
