Grocery Retailers Gaining Hot Coffee Market Share
The research company Romir has summed up the results of a large-scale study of the hot coffee market in Russia for 2022. One of the global changes in the market structure was the entry into the top five food retailers - previously the top 5 traditionally consisted of fast food chains and gas stations.
According to Romir's research, fast food chains continue to be leaders in the Hot Coffee segment (ready-made coffee purchased in cafes, restaurants, food trucks and coffee shops, including takeaway coffee). Along with them, the Pyaterochka retail chain entered the top 5 market participants at the end of 2022. This is a new situation for this segment, since grocery retail has never come so close to the market leaders before. Pyaterochka increased its market share by 1.4 percentage points compared to 2021 and overtook several players in terms of volume.
The 15 leaders in the segment, which together occupy more than half of the hot coffee market, include the gas station chains Gazpromneft, Lukoil and Rosneft, the Cofix coffee shop chain and Dodo Pizza pizzeria chain, as well as a number of other food retailers.
“The Hot Coffee category in Russia is one of the most popular and fastest growing in the fast food segment,” notes Anastasia Sidorina, Romir Customer Relations Director. “The results of our large study indicate that competition in the category is intensifying: federal grocery retailers are actively growing, which over the past year have significantly increased their market shares and influenced the flow of customers within the segment.
