On weekdays or on weekends: when do Russians use cars more often?

12 May 2025

ROMIR publishes the latest results of the GRI* rating for the automotive industry. During the 2025 study, it was possible to find out how often Russians who have cars use them.

It turned out that the absolute majority of car owners get behind the wheel on weekdays - 64%. This is 46 percentage points more than people who use their car at least once a week (18%). Even fewer owners use their car on weekdays at least once a month - only 10%, and there are even fewer of those who practically never drive or drive several times a year: 6 and 5%, respectively.

On weekends, Russians' cars also do not stand in parking lots: 60% of users get behind the wheel on Saturdays and Sundays.

Thus, the difference in the frequency of car use on weekdays and weekends is very small, only 4 percentage points. The slight preponderance in favor of weekdays may be associated, among other things, with trips to the office. This also correlates with the data that the majority of car owners (40%) are people with good financial status who can buy durable goods (except for a car and a summer house). And this, in turn, may indicate a permanent income and work. Interestingly, there was no significant difference in the groups of car owners who used cars less often.

“For many, buying a car is a large financial investment. Few are ready to spend such money if they do not plan to use the car regularly,” notes Lyudmila Fukova, Senior Director of Customer Service at ROMIR. “This is also reflected in the fact that there are no preferences in the days of the week for driving.”
