ROMIR has revealed the real cost of food in retail chains in the regions of Russia

22 November 2024

The ROMIR Institute of Man has calculated the average cost of a Russian food basket, consisting of products from 35 everyday product groups. According to the data obtained, on average, the purchase of the necessary food will cost the buyer 4,302 rubles.
The study was conducted in October-November 2024 and covered food prices in the seven most popular convenience store chains in 19 cities across the country. Among the federal retail chains participating in the study, the following can be distinguished: Verny, VkusVill, Dixie, Magnit, Super Lenta, Pyaterochka and Fasol.
The most expensive food baskets were in Krasnodar (average cost - 4,865 rubles), Chelyabinsk (4,786 rubles) and Volgograd (4,757 rubles). The most profitable food baskets are available to Novosibirsk residents (3,802 rubles), Omsk residents (3,922 rubles), and Krasnoyarsk residents (3,926 rubles). It is noteworthy that the country's largest megacities, Moscow and St. Petersburg, did not make it into the top in terms of food prices, demonstrating average figures.
As for the difference between retail chains, the most profitable food basket is in the Pyaterochka retail chain. On average, its cost across the country is 3,368 rubles.

The most expensive basket belongs to the VkusVill retail chain with a price of 6,674 rubles, which is almost twice the cost of the basket in the most affordable chain in the study.

“The study of the basic food basket allows us to determine the availability of product categories for residents of different regions, which is the most important factor in economic stability, since food costs account for a significant share of Russians' budgets. According to the data based on the ROMIR Consumer Panel, 39% of Russians and 33% of Russians spend 30-50% and 50% or more of their wallet on food, respectively,” ROMIR noted.

To calculate the cost of the basic consumer basket in grocery chains, a list of goods that meet the Rosstat requirements for the composition of the minimum food consumer basket for 2024 and are available in the listed retail chains was compiled and analyzed. This list includes bread products, vegetables and fruits, groceries, meat and fish, dairy products, eggs and other product groups of everyday demand. In each retail chain, ROMIR analysts selected the items that open the shelf, that is, the most affordable in price.
