Traditions and trends: how Russians plan to celebrate the New Year 2025

08 January 2025

New Year is a traditional family holiday, and the data of the study conducted by ROMIR confirm this. 53% of Russians plan to celebrate 2025 in a cozy home atmosphere, with their family, at their dacha or in a country house. This indicator reflects the stability of traditional values, the priority of which is confirmed by the ROMIR rating of all-Russian values: family ranks first, followed by safety and reliability.
Nevertheless, traditional celebration scenarios do not exclude elements of renewal and the search for new experiences. 18% of respondents plan to celebrate the New Year in the company of friends, which indicates the continued importance of social ties and the desire to share the festive atmosphere with like-minded people. 12% of respondents have not yet decided on their plans, which indicates some uncertainty and the possibility of spontaneous decisions in the near future. More exotic options for celebrating are preferred by small groups of respondents: 6% chose restaurants, bars or cafes, 3% will go on a trip around Russia. It is noteworthy that 4% of respondents will work on New Year's Eve, and 3% will refuse to celebrate at all, which emphasizes the diversity of life attitudes and priorities in modern Russian society.
Data on plans for the New Year holidays confirm the trend towards home holidays. 50% of Russians plan to spend the holidays at home, 30% - at their dacha or visiting relatives and friends. This indicates a desire to take a break from work and the daily hustle and bustle in a comfortable and familiar environment. However, 6% of respondents are planning a trip around Russia, which indicates an interest in learning about their country. 8% will work in the first days of January, which emphasizes the intense pace of modern life and the need for some citizens to work even on holidays.
In general, the data obtained indicate the preservation of traditional values in celebrating the New Year, but at the same time there is a tendency to search for new experiences and leisure options. The results of the ROMIR study allow us to conclude that modern Russians are striving for a balance between traditions and new opportunities in celebrating the New Year.
