Analyzing the Dynamics of the Russian Food Market in 2025: Trends and Prospects

05 March 2025

On February 26th, ROMIR's Customer Relations Director, Anastasia Sidorina, participated in the World Food event, organized jointly with InfoLine. The event focused on the outcomes of the Russian food market study for 2024 and projections for 2025, serving as the official launch of preparations for the upcoming WorldFood Moscow exhibition in fall 2025.

Experts' analysis revealed notable shifts in Russian consumers' behavior. In 2024, a steady positive mood was evident, reflected in consumer basket dynamics, particularly in food retail. A significant increase in average household spending was observed, driven by both an increase in average check size and frequency of purchases, although this trend is not uniform across all categories, primarily affecting those seeking additional pleasure and comfort.

It is worth noting that there has been a shift in consumer preferences towards more expensive product categories. For instance, there has been an increase in demand for fresh meats, processed meats, and fish, including deli meats. Despite the increase in price, consumers are gradually interested in these products

Another important trend is the active development of the ready-to-eat (RTE) food market. This has been driven by the growth of the hotel, restaurant, and café (HoReCa) industry, which has provided a significant boost to the food industry.

The indicators of natural and cash sales in this category show significant growth, indicating the formation of consumer loyalty towards ready-made products that offer convenience and satisfaction.

“In our previous discussion, we noted not only the quantitative indicators of demand growth but also the qualitative changes in consumer preferences. The shopper of 2025 has become more discerning, valuing convenience and variety. We predict that the market for prepared food as well as premium categories, such as fresh meat, fish, and delicatessen, will continue to grow steadily. It is essential for companies to adapt to these trends by offering products that meet the modern demands for quality, convenience, and, of course, enjoyment,” commented Anastasia Sidorina.

In conclusion, the experts emphasized the key factors that determine the current and future Russian food market. Consumers are currently demonstrating rational behavior, seeking the best value for their money. At the same time, convenience and pleasure are important components. The grocery basket is increasingly seen to "indulge oneself".
